Nicola recently joined Abbotsleigh and already feels right at home as part of their Recreation and Well-Being Team.
How long have you worked at Nellsar?
I started at Abbotsleigh in September 2023.
What made you apply for a role within your Home?
The job I was doing was not rewarding enough and I missed the care that I gave in a previous job as a Care Assistant/Patient transport.
What does your role involve?
Various activities in the Home (crafts, reading, walks in the garden), visiting residents in their rooms and adapting activities that are suitable. Helping with mealtimes and trips out.
What skills do you need to do your role?
Patience, understanding, compassion and a sense of humour.
What elements of your role do you most enjoy?
Seeing a smile on someone’s face and experiencing a resident’s enjoyment when doing an activity with them.
How would you describe your Home and working with your colleagues?
I feel part of the team already and very comfortable. Everyone is very helpful and welcoming.
What activities do your residents enjoy doing with you?
They enjoying the garden, going for walks and visiting the chickens. Listening and singing to music.
What are you most looking forward to doing with your residents in future?
I am looking forward to using my own skills to engage our residents in interesting and fun activities. I especially think that the benefits from getting outside in nature are so important to wellbeing, so hope to encourage that. I also hope to pass on my passion for light exercise, as I am a qualified Personal Trainer.
