As Head Chef at Abbotsleigh, Alex strives to make a real difference to the lives of his residents through his cooking. He leads and encourages his Kitchen Team to put forward ideas, and is passionate about food quality and presentation.

When did you join Nellsar?
I joined in 2017.

What made you apply for a role within your Home?
I was doing regular Agency shifts at Abbotsleigh, and from all the Care Homes I have worked in this one was the most impressive – stunning views, passionate staff and seeing how much Nellsar supported their staff, I knew I wanted to join the team.

What role(s) have you had at your Home?
I started as a Care Assistant, and soon afterwards realised I wanted to do more for the residents and myself. I was impressed with the Kitchen Team, lead by Johnny, and switched to the Catering Team as a Kitchen Assistant. I was promoted to Chef initially and have now been Head Chef for four years.

What does your current role involve?
I make sure our residents have the best service, most delicious dinners and person-centred service and care.

What skills do you need to do your role?
In my opinion, some of the skills needed to be a Head Chef are patience, being observant and caring and having a love of food.

Have you had any training during your time at Nellsar?
Since I joined Nellsar I’ve attended the Chef Production NVQ Level 2 and 3 courses.

What elements of your role do you most enjoy and what are you most proud of?
I enjoy planning the menus, sorting out the kitchen and seeing our residents enjoy themselves.

How would you describe your Home and working with your colleagues?
Abbotsleigh is a welcoming Care Home that takes pride in caring for its residents and team members.

What meals/dishes do your residents particularly enjoy?
Our residents enjoy all of their dinners, but the fish and chips and roast dinners are still their favourite!

What are you most looking forward to planning/cooking in the future?
I look forward to planning the Wimbledon barbecue and upcoming events that our residents enjoy the most.
